UPCOMING EVENTS

CURRENT MUSEUM EXHIBIT

Florida in the Civil War - MEN, SALT, CATTLE and BATTLE

The War of the Rebellion, The Civil War, War Between the States, The War of Northern Aggression, whichever name is used for the conflict between the Northern States and Southern States, it was an event of awful and cataclysmic proportions. The War took more American lives than World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War . . . COMBINED!

The exhibit is displayed in ten panels, each telling the story of Florida's role in the conflict. In addition, there are several panels dedicated to local skirmishes in  the local area. Bayport, west of Brooksville in Hernando County, displays letters from the Union blockading ship commanders detailing their raid on Confederate positions at the port, along with maps and diagrams of ship positions. There is a section devoted to activity in and around Crystal River and raids and skirmishes in the Cedar Key area. A panel is devoted to David Levy Yulee of Homosassa, his sugar plantation, and the owner of the Sugar Mill ruins that can be visted every day in Homosassa.

The Pineola Train Wreck exhibit of a local head-on collision between two diesel freight trains that took place south of Floral City in October, 1956 is also on display, along with many period photographs of the town dating back as far as 1884. Please come see us and take a trip back in time in Floral City!
